On July 20th, 1989, Lieutenant Gen. Khin Nyunt came to her house and put her under house arrest. She was charged for “inciting civil unrest and breaking security laws” The government placed barbed wire, armed bayonet soldiers , and tanks outside surrounding her property. She had no access to the outside world till 1995. For six years she had no access to her husband and son. Although Suu Kyi was told she would be released from house arrest if she left the country, she stayed to prove a point and stand her ground. She wanted to stay in house arrest until the political prisoners were freed, and the government was turned over to the civilians. Three years after she was released from house arrest, she formed a committee of representatives and declared it to be the sole voice of Burma. However, in September 2000, she was put under house arrest again. She was released in May 2002.
